Mission StatementThe Alabama organizing Project (AOP) exists to assist organizations in the state to work collaboratively in empowering their constituents ---many of whom are low income people -- to find policy, program and developmental solutions to problems of poverty in a state that historically has frustrated attempts at democratic empowerment through racial, economic, and social fragmentation.Innovations in Alabama Community OrganizingMembers of the Alabama Organizing Project are Alabama Arise, Alabama New South Coalition, Alabama Coalition Against Hunger Federation of southern Cooperatives, Federation of Child-Care Centers of Alabama, and Greater Birmingham Ministries. The membership of these groups span the racial, geographic, and rural/urban diversity of Alabama. The AOP collaborative public policy agenda and organizing plan overcomes Alabama's historic fragmentation through its focus on family economic security issues, indigenous development strategies for low-income communities and an analysis of the political economy of Alabama that overcomes past division
Each of the organizations seeks to deepen and broaden the impact of their own
constituency while implementing a shared statewide agenda of democratic social change. The
role of AOP Convener/Administrator is rotated among the six groups every four months. Our
innovations are the following:
1.) Introduce new models of shared
leadership development resources to AOP members' organizations and other stakeholders
through a collaborative Request for Proposals (RFP) and collaborative funding process.
2.) Build an "Alabama Quality of Life" model agenda
that is effective, democratically representative, and grounded in cooperative rather than
competitive means of improving the quality of life of Alabamians.
3.)
Establish a multi-platform electronic communications network
(fax/e-mail/web page) that facilitates communications among community organizations in the
state. |
